The film is based on real events taking place between 2006 and 2008.  In central Gothenburg, Sweden, a group of boys, aged 12-14, robbed other children on more than 70 occasions. The thieves used an elaborate scheme called the 'brother trick', involving advanced role-play and gang rhetoric. They did not have to resort to physical violence or threats. The film was selected at Cannes 2011, Directors' Fortnight. “PLAY deals with the type of events currently taking place throughout Europe. Events that we have difficulty processing and thus tend to avoid. One reaction I’ve often encountered is when journalists assure me that they understand what PLAY is all about, but they’re afraid others may misinterpret the film. Shying away from the controversial aspects of events like these, either out of fear or kind-hearted concern, will only preserve and possibly fortify the fundamental problem. The LUX Prize nomination, which involves screening this film for the Members of the European Parliament, is a truly significant development. Hopefully their reaction to PLAY will pose a problem and prompt them to rise to that challenge.” (Ruben Östlund)

RUBEN ÖSTLUND (1974, Styrsö, Sweden) studied film at the University of Gothenburg. In 2004, he finished his first fiction feature film THE GUITAR MONGOLOID, which was awarded the Fipresci prize in Moscow in 2005. In 2006, he directed the short film AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SCENE NUMBER: 6882, which won the UIP Award in Edinburgh, and a nomination for the 'Guldbagge' for the best short film of the year. INVOLUNTARY followed in 2008 making its premiere in Cannes’ Official Selection and won several awards, including that of Best Film at the Brussels European Film Festival and the Jury’s Special Prize at the Mar del Plata Film Festival. He is cofounder of Plattform Produktion with Erik Hemmendorff.
