synopsis
Fictional story about the legendary feat of Giovanni Augusto Sutter. Born in Baden and transmigrated to Switzerland, Sutter has to suddenly flee, leaving his wife and kids behind, due to his political leanings having aroused the suspicion of the police. Once in America he goes West. After an epic trek, which he faces with only two companions, he reaches the longed-for banks of the Sacramento. He obtains vast areas of land in concession and after a few years of hard work he manages to transform them into the most perfect and prosperous land. But suddenly he discovers gold. Sutter tries in vain to battle against the greed that takes over his farmers. Adventurers flock from all over the world, ruining Sutter’s property. Despite his call for justice, he must give up his dream and dies poor and alone on the foot of Capitol Hill in Washington. The film won the Mussolini Cup at the Venice Film Festival in 1936.
The programme of events organised by the BLS together with the Venice Days is dedicated to ‘territory’ as a source of inspiration. “Creativity and territory” is indeed the theme for the Workshop taking place in the Casa degli Autori. It is connected to the BLS initiative which will be presented at the end of the Workshop. Also linked to the idea of territory is the film L’IMPERATORE DELLA CALIFORNIA, a western from the 30s directed and played by Luis Trenker, from the Alto Adige region, chosen especially for this occasion.
