synopsis
A long and unprecedented journey from Havana to Guantanamo, at a time in which people were expecting a change in the politics of the United States and in the Revolution itself. A journey through the body of Cubai, with stops in Santa Clara, the city in which the legend of Che Guevara was born, or in Bayamo, the first proud capital of the island, or in Santiago, where the Revolutions mystique was born. And then, the voices, the hopes, the frustrations and dreams of the young, of students from the Latin American School of Medicine, from the Arts School, from the Film School and from the renowned ballet school of the historical etoile Alicia Alonso. «In order to tell the story of a country that is surprising and anomalous you have to equip yourself with the tools to reveal it from the inside, taking into account a countrys stories, idiosyncrasies, conquests, mistakes and contradictions, but also the more banal realities such as the precariousness of many roads and therefore the difficulty of moving and of starting over». Gianni Miną is a sort of Hitchcock of the documentary and of the interview. His silhouette and his unmistakable voice are a stamp of quality and originality. Troisi dreamt about having his own address book, in which to find Maradona and Fidel Castros numbers, while we dreamt about following him on his last riverboat journey in Cuba. Exploring the island in search of contradictions and moods, stumbling across political and material obstacles, forcing oneself to continue to examine it, even after decades, from the inside, with love as well as rigour. Havana, Santa Clara, Guantanamo, a concert with record attendance, a chat on a flight of steps, all these pieces are necessary to complete the picture of the most complex, visionary and contradictory social and political experiment of modern day.
