synopsis
Over 40 people were interviewed – in Italy, France, England and the US – in making this film, which is divided into four parts. The first is De Sica Si Racconta, in which Vittorio De Sica talks about himself and his films through archive material from a portrait Giulio Macchi shot for RAI in 1960. The second is I Ricordi – stories from his three children, actors, directors and collaborators on his films. Cosa Rimane offers interviews with great Italian and foreign directors on De Sica’s “film lesson.” In Lezioni di Regia, through several letters from his sets written to daughter Emi, De Sica divulge his “method” in a kind of daily work journal full of artistic and human observations that reveal his greatness and extraordinary humanity.
In this journey appear: Dario Fo, Franca Valeri, Shirley McLaine, Clint Eastwood, Woody Allen, Abdellatif Kechiche, Giulio Andreotti, Dino De Laurentiis, Pasquale Squitieri, Ken Loach, John Landis, Paul Mazursky, Giuseppe Rotunno, Tonino Guerra, Armando Trovaioli and Renzo Rossellini, to name but a few. Not to mention the archive interviews with, among others, Sofia Loren, Alberto Sordi, Federico Fellini, Giuseppe Amato and Cesare Zavattini.

Vittorio De Sica, the magician. His first magic trick was to make Italy reappear when no one knew what it looked like anymore. His second, to make himself disappear when everyone thought they knew him. The third has to do with his life and clearing that up would take over 20 films. Which is why it’s good to start from a documentary, which of all the genres is the most factual and the most temporary. Indeed, ten points of view do not make up a single truth, and mixing up the “investigation” and the self-portrait usually transforms once and for all that which was into legend. De Sica belonged to everyone, and only to himself, and in fact as soon as he found himself he did everything possible to lose himself. In cinema, in the game, in a life full of false bottoms, like the trunk of a magician who hides his tricks in plain sight, as in Poe’s famous purloined letter. Ultimately, the illusion vanishes, the show remains. Even when it is a show of truth. Perhaps this is the true mystery.
