Rashid Masharawi

Rashid Masharawi was born in the Gaza strip in Palestine in 1962. His first film Curfew (1993) was presented at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes. Two years later, again at Cannes, his second film, Haifa, participated in the section Un Certain Regard. In 2002 Ticket to Jerusalem was granted at the Cairo Film Festival. Finally, Arafat my brother (2005) was presented at the last Rotterdam Festival.

We Palestinians have the feeling of not being in control of our destiny. The hope that a solution has been found comes around regularly. Then that hope runs out and we just start waiting again. Waiting has become an integral part of our lives. It’s at the root of our entire being.
Refugees play out the role of Palestinian destiny. Waiting was filmed inside several of the 60-something refugee camps in the region, the human map of Palestine.
I’m in my element in the camps, and I currently live in the West Bank.
Today there are around 4 million Palestinian refugees descended from the original 800,000 people who fled or were deported between 1948-1950.
