synopsis
There are lovers who, despite loving each other, don’t know how to love and absurdly express their love by torturing each other. Alan and Angel are trapped in profound love. Belle has just fled from a broken marriage and rents the room next to Angel’s; she also happens to have been a young love of Alan’s, who Alan has not forgotten. The two women become intimate friends, travelling down the path of love and sharing their secrets, yet unaware that the lover who they both miss is the same man.
In the Taki An Jinja shrine in Hokkaido Japan, there is an ancient well, which, when found by Angel and Belle, will reveal the answer to their hidden love. On New Year’s Eve, following a fortune teller’s absurd yet seemingly believable instructions, which dare not be questioned, the two women, filled with hope and anxiety, depart for Hokkaido and the Taki An Jinja well, which will provide them with the answers they seek.

A number of years ago, the first film by a talented filmmaker who anticipated the nouvelle vague of the cinema of Taiwan arrived at the Venice Film Festival almost by chance. The film was Vive l’amour and the filmmaker, Tsai Ming-Liang, no longer needs an introduction. Now it is our turn to show the work of another talented young filmmaker who comes from the same culture and who was the assistant to Tsai Ming-Liang. Falling... in Love is the extreme result of a cinema that engages in a dialogue with the West, starting with its own expressive force and with an idea of time, of space, and of history that cannot be compared with anything else.
